Tabula Rasa - January 2022

Tabula Rasa - my first series.

 

I went through a lot of downs towards the end of 2021. I was struggling with my mental health and was at a loss with what I was going to do next. In fact, I didn’t know if I had the strength to continue with life. But these paintings - my Tabula Rasa’s, or New Beginnings as their translation from Latin suggests, demonstrate that I can always start afresh and at any point in my life and speaks of my ability to create something beautiful at any point in time, in order to communicate my feelings, thoughts and emotions, in my own way through my art. I created these pieces as a way to prove to myself that, even during my dark and depressive times, I am still able to form something that I can be proud of.

 

Gold mixed in with the black paint symbolises who I am because of everything and everyone in my life - all the good and none of the bad should be discounted. I should embrace it, will embrace it, have indeed embraced it. I let my feelings overcome me when I paint. I’ve had my share of issues with low self-esteem, low self-confidence and low self-acceptance, but with this series, I can finally say, with absolute certainty, that I am proud of myself and I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me.
